Improved Aerodynamics

The CARBON WING is mounted in the low-pressure area directly behind the rider. By placing the system here it creates virtually no drag from the system itself and actually decreases the rider’s overall drag!

Original Dual-Rear Innovation

XLAB’s rear carriers have often been copied, but like any copy, it is never as good as the original. With over a decade of experience designing these carriers and taking them through countless testing methods, no wonder top athletes depend on XLAB… winning more Ironman Distance World Championships than all our competitors combined.

Location, location, location…. and positioning!
Rear carriers should not interfere with the air on the rider’s back, but instead fill in the turbulence ‘hole’ behind the riders posterior, thereby reducing the rider’s drag (which accounts for 64% of energy used on a racing bicycle).

Aerodynamics

When a rider drafts behind another rider, the rider behind has a reduction in power required due to having less drag as they are riding in the low pressure wake of the rider in front. This can be as high as a 29% reduction. The other result is that the rider in front also goes faster as the air sees the two riders as virtually connected and the airstream jumps the gap between the riders, causing a lower drag on the front rider.
So the idea is to place the rear bottle in the draft of the rider, in other words in the low pressure area usually in the location of the back of the seat/seatpost. One is trying to basically fill in the low pressure void behind the rider.

Tested & Proven

  • The design process: All rear carriers are meticulously crafted by our team of Engineers from sketch to computer concepts. Next, designs are taken through a series of aerodynamic testing through our CFD (Computational Fluid Dynamics) software.
  • Next, prototypes and previous generation carriers are taken through a series of testings at various Wind Tunnels across the world, including the legendary San Diego Wind Tunnel. The Carbon Wing was recently reaffirmed with Velodrome testing using the Alphamantis technology.
  • Riders used were World Champions who are able to hold constant aero positions and power outputs – so individual results may vary.
